WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DANDRUFF AND A DRY SCALP?

Dandruff and a dry scalp are very similar scalp problems, but once you know the difference between the two types of flakes, you can decipher what you’re dealing with quite easily. And, rest assured, they’re both very common, lots of people suffer from dandruff and a dry scalp, so you’re definitely not alone.

WHAT IS DANDRUFF?

Like the rest of the skin on your body, the scalp sheds dead skin cells by pushing them outwards, where they eventually and naturally flake off. These flakes are normally very small and unnoticeable. However, dandruff occurs when this process happens more rapidly than the normal cycle, causing a build-up of more visible flakes.

The root cause of dandruff is from a naturally occurring microbe, which is found on everyone’s scalp, called Malassezia globosa. It feeds on the scalps natural oils (aka sebum), as the sebum breaks down, it produces a by-product called oleic acid. Lots of people are sensitive to oleic acid, so their scalp responds by becoming irritated and inflamed.

This inflammation causes the scalp to become red and itchy, leading the body to signal to the brain to shed skin cells at a faster rate to deal with it. Other factors such as stress, hormones and diet can also exacerbate it.

Oleic acid is a fatty acid, which is an odourless and colourless (to pale yellow) oil. This excess oil explains why dandruff flakes are usually oily, slightly sticky and yellowish in colour.

WHAT IS A DRY SCALP?

In contrast, a dry scalp is caused by a lack of oil on the surface of the scalp. This lack of oil can cause the scalp to feel dry and uncomfortable, and lead to some flaking. A dry scalp can be triggered by a number of things, but largely it’s down to your skin type – if you suffer from dry skin on your body, you’re more prone to a dry scalp. However, external factors such as extreme changes in temperate and external pollution can also play a part. Flakes as a result of a dry scalp are normally small, white and dry. They are quite different to dandruff flakes, so you should be able to tell them apart.

Whether you suffer from a dry scalp or dandruff, try our 3-step ginger scalp regime to help you get to the root of the problem. It helps to clear loose flakes and nourish the scalp for happier, healthier-feeling hair.

OUR SCALP CARE REGIME

  1. Apply Ginger Scalp Care Shampoo to wet hair. Lather and rinse well. This will cleanse your scalp and hair and will help clear loose flakes.
  2. Next, massage the Ginger Scalp Care Conditioner through your wet hair, working it through from your scalp to the tip, to make sure the hair is completely covered. To help distribute it more evenly, use a comb to brush it through. Leave it for a couple of minutes and rinse well.
  3. Dry your hair as usual. Try not to use too much product.
  4. Use your fingers or a comb to part your hair and apply one or two drops of the Ginger Scalp Serum directly to your scalp. Massage it into your scalp until it’s fully absorbed and evenly distributed.
  5. Repeat this process to cover your whole scalp – four to six sections should do it. For best results, repeat the ginger 3-step scalp care regime three times a week
