100% VEGETARIAN BEAUTY SINCE 1976
“I WANT TO WORK FOR A COMPANY THAT CONTRIBUTES TO AND IS PART OF THE COMMUNITY. I WANT SOMETHING NOT JUST TO INVEST IN. I WANT SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN.” - ANITA RODDICK
We’ve been a vegetarian and cruelty-free brand since we were founded in 1976. Discover what makes a beauty product vegetarian, and why over half our products are vegan.
WHAT IS A VEGETARIAN BEAUTY PRODUCT?
Vegetarian-friendly beauty products are free of any animal-derived ingredients obtained as a result of animal slaughter. These can also include animal-derived ingredients that do not involve animal slaughter, like honey, beeswax, shellac and lanolin. Believe it or not, but many cosmetics do contain by-products from the slaughter industry. We’re proud to say that none of ours ever have or ever will!
WHAT IS A VEGAN BEAUTY PRODUCT?
These products contain no animal-derived ingredients, including honey and beeswax.
WHY AREN'T ALL OUR PRODUCTS VEGAN?
We use honey or beeswax in most of our non-vegan products for their superior cosmetic benefits and because they’re organic, wild harvested and sustainably sourced from our Community Trade partners.
A very small number of our products use shellac (a secretion of the lac insect) and lanolin, oil extracted from sheep’s wool. Neither of these processes harms the animals in any way, however we have not created any new products using these animal-derived ingredients for many years.
HOW DO I KNOW IF OUR PRODUCTS ARE VEGAN?
Simple! We know how important vegan products are for our customers, so we label our vegan beauty products as ‘100% vegan’ on the packaging and in the online product descriptions. All our other products are 100% vegetarian.
COMMUNITY TRADE HONEY FROM ETHIOPIA
Our Community Trade honey is sustainably sourced from Beza Mar in Ethiopia. It comes from the UNESCO Sheka Forest Biosphere Reserve, where we’ve worked with the ‘bee whisperers’ of Beza Mar since 2009. Our trade helps support the sustainable use of these forests by providing a steady income for locals and empowering them to preserve wild African bees, which are vital to our planet.

COMMUNITY TRADE BEESWAX FROM CAMEROON
Our Community Trade beeswax is sustainably sourced from Guide D’Espoir in northern Cameroon. This cooperative ensures traditional beekeeping techniques are kept alive. The beekeepers wild harvest the beeswax from hives in the forest, respecting the natural rhythm of the honeybees as they have done for centuries. Our beeswax is pure, pesticide-free and certified organic by the Soil Association.
DISCOVER MORE COMMUNITY TRADE STORIES
We launched Community Trade in 1987, and today we have Community Trade partners in 21 countries around the world. We harness the traditional skills of local artisans and source ingredients harvested by small farming cooperatives, trading fairly to benefit local communities. You can read more about their stories here.
We recently learned that a number of products classified as vegan may not be.
It’s possible that some of our products contain the resin of a lac bug (like a beetle), which is used to create ambrettolide, a fragrance ingredient in some of our formulas. Sourcing the ingredient doesn’t harm the bug, but we have strict standards for what we classify as vegan. So to be on the safe side, we will no longer consider these products as vegan.
Once we discovered this issue, we began removing the vegan status from these products on our sales channels. If you want to find out more about the affected products, please feel free to contact our Customer Care team.
We’re now reformulating these products and will keep you up to date on when vegan versions are back on shelf. We’re really sorry we didn’t get it right the first time, and hope you can stick with us as we work hard to bring you more innovative vegan products.
