Why is SPF important?

We all love the feeling of the sun on our skin, but unfortunately there are damaging rays hiding in that golden light.

Sunlight includes both UVA and UVB rays. The effects of UVB are well known to anyone who’s ever experienced sunburn: that red, tight, stinging burn from too much time out of the shade on a hot day. But UVA rays are much more subtle, and they shine through even on cool, cloudy days. As long as it’s light, UVA rays are present. Even when it’s snowing. Even – shockingly – through glass, so being inside is no protection if you have big windows.

It’s this frequent exposure to UVA rays that causes damage to the dermis – that’s the thickest layer of your skin – causing sun damage such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and even skin cancer.

Because of this, it’s essential to use sunscreen and include a moisturiser with SPF in your skincare every day.

What does SPF actually mean?

The SPF number on a product, or ‘Sun Protection Factor’, tells you the strength of protection that product gives you. It’s important to note that you need to choose a broad spectrum SPF, which means it helps to protect you from both UVA and UVB rays.

When added to moisturiser, an SPF can help give you an added boost, but shouldn’t be considered a substitute for a dedicated SPF product. We all need a belt and braces approach where the sun is concerned.

SUMMERTIME HYDRATION

To keep our skin happy and healthy-looking through the summer, there are some really good habits we can all get into.

EXTRA PROTECTION

It’s not just sun protection products that can keep your skin safe. These four tips will help too…

  1. Leave your hat on

Whether you’re in the city or at the seaside, a hat can provide that extra bit of shelter for your face. It’ll also help keep your scalp safe.

2. Find shade

Sun-seekers, it’s OK to give in to shade every once in a while. Make sure to give your skin a little break with a nice shady spot.

3. Wear loose-fitting clothes

Your clothes can help protect your skin. A loose fit is preferable, as with tight clothing the material is stretched, so the level of protection may be reduced.

4. Be wary of windows

While glass blocks UVB rays pretty well, UVA rays still get through. Whether you’re at home, in the car or on a plane – don’t forget your SPF!
